EULAR video production: Undergraduate training in physical examination of the musculoskeletal system

All over Europe many rheumatologists are involved in education of undergraduate students and general practitioners. EULAR and its Standing Committee on Education and Training (ESCET) want to support them in their efforts by developing and providing good quality learning tools such as interactive online DVD’s on physical examination of the musculoskeletal system. At the end of their training, students should have at least the same capacities as general practitioners.

Starting with the level of undergraduate students, a first DVD is now available on this site. It is dedicated to the GALS examination (G=gait, A=arms, L=legs, S=spine) and takes some 16 minutes to study.  Analysis of the GALS  represents a comprehensive clinical overview of the patient complaining of musculoskeletal symptoms and is an efficient start to learn the physical examination of the rheumatic patient.  The DVD was realized at the University of Nottingham with Professor Mike Doherty and his team (2009).

Further DVDs will follow on general aspects of medical history, physical examination and screening of rheumatic patients. DVDs more specifically dedicated to the examination of each body region (shoulder, knee etc) are also planned.

This EULAR online educational programme is run by a special EULAR task force, which started its work in 2007. Members of the task force include Antony Woolf (United Kingdom), José A  da Silva (Portugal), Hans Bijlsma (Netherlands), Mike Doherty (United Kingdom), Karen L Faarvang (Denmark),  Charlotte Ringsted (Denmark), Nada Cikes (Croatia), Irena Zimmermann (Poland), Geza Balint (Hungary), Angela Tincani (Italy), and chairman Maurizio Cutolo (Italy).
