AAA
Alliance Against Arthritis

In March 2004, EULAR initiated the “Alliance Against Arthritis” in Brussels. This
new Europe-wide action aims at improving the prospects for people with rheumatic diseases and
reducing the enormous burden of these conditions. AAA brings together health professionals,
researchers in the area of rheumatology and organisations of people with
rheumatic diseases, united in the pursuit of several shared goals:
- More public funding for rheumatology research
- Better awareness of rheumatic diseases and today’s therapeutic possibilities, both at
national and European level
- Better and more complete European disability legislation.
European patients, researchers and doctors say that European politicians have so far failed to
recognise the major burden of rheumatic diseases for both the individual and society as a
whole. AAA wants to contribute to making EU decision-makers aware of the need for fighting against
one of Europe’s major health threats. AAA’s immediate goal at EU level is to create
greater Community support for research in rheumatic diseases in the 7th Research Framework
Programme as well as to gain a more visible place in the future Community Health and Consumer
Protection Programme 2007-2013.
