European Union
Over the last few years, EULAR has made considerable efforts to develop its European presence through a great variety of activities and actions at the European level. The new Alliance Against Arthritis initiative was created in 2004 to contribute to making political decision-makers in the EU aware of the need for fighting against one of Europe's major health threats. EULAR has applied and received the status of a regular or observer member in several advisory structures attached to the European institutions. Major successes have been achieved at the Community legislative front where EULAR has managed to influence new EU programmes and policies. The profile and importance of rheumatic diseases have been greatly raised. Not least, several major events organised in Brussels have additionally contributed to presenting EULAR as an active and engaged European health organisation.
Rheumatic diseases: a major burden for the European population
Approximately one third of Europe's population, or around 150 million people, suffer from a rheumatic disease at some point in their lives. One in 5 of all Europeans are under long-term treatment for rheumatism and arthritis. Rheumatic diseases are the second most common reason for consulting a doctor. Rheumatic diseases account for 40 to 50 % of all work-related ill-health. About 450 million days of paid sick leave in Europe are due to rheumatic complaints. Up to 60 per cent of persons on early-retirement or long-term sick leave claim a rheumatic condition as the reason. Rheumatic diseases are one of the leading causes of disease burden across Europe. Currently, they lead to estimated losses of more than 2 percent of GNP each year.
