EULAR video production: Undergraduate training in physical examination of the musculoskeletal system

All over Europe many rheumatologists are involved in education of undergraduate students and general practitioners. EULAR and its Standing Committee on Education and Training (ESCET) want to support them in their efforts by developing and providing good quality learning tools such as interactive online DVDs on physical examination of the musculoskeletal system.

At the end of their training, students should have at least the same competencies as general practitioners. Starting with the level of undergraduate students, two DVDs are available currently on this site - see the right hand side of this webpage for downloads.

Both the Principles of the Musculoskeletal History and Examination DVD (2012) and the GALS DVD (2009)  were realized at the University of Nottingham with Professor Mike Doherty and his team.

1 - Principles of the musculoskeletal history and examination

The first DVD is Principles of the musculoskeletal history and examination which covers the key principles and techniques involved in the enquiry and examination of a person with musculoskeletal symptoms. It is especially useful for students who are just starting their musculoskeletal or general medicine clinical skills course. The DVD takes some 35 minutes to study.

2 - The GALS screen

The second DVD is The GALS screen (G=gait, A=arms, L=legs, S=spine) which takes some 16 minutes to study. The GALS is a validated screen for quick but efficient assessment of a person's musculoskeletal system and for their ability to undertake activities of daily living. On its own, the GALS screen often provides sufficient information to allow a diagnosis of prevalent locomotor disorders. It is particularly useful for students when they are first learning their musculoskeletal examination skills.

This EULAR online educational programme was run by a special EULAR task force, which started its work in 2007. Members of the task force include Antony Woolf (United Kingdom), José A da Silva (Portugal), Hans Bijlsma (Netherlands), Mike Doherty (United Kingdom), Karen L Faarvang (Denmark), Charlotte Ringsted (Denmark), Nada Cikes (Croatia), Irena Zimmermann (Poland), Geza Balint (Hungary), Angela Tincani (Italy), and chairman Maurizio Cutolo (Italy).
