Presidential Message - 2016

Let’s have a scientifically brilliant new year 2016!

Gerd R. Burmester, EULAR President

Dear colleagues,

As 2016 starts, EULAR would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your support and collaboration, and to look forward to a new year of more EULAR milestones, focused on disseminating science and education to everyone involved in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).

The year will start with an exciting new offer of our standing EULAR Courses, such as the first EULAR Course on Immunology or our classic EULAR Ultrasound Course, the best platform to learn how Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSUS) could be used in rheumatology practice and research.

The EULAR Annual European Congress of Rheumatology 2016 in London will be the highlight of the year for everyone involved in the field of RMDS. Speakers and participants from around the world will share science, knowledge and education. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to watch all oral presentations virtually and will be provided with a complimentary one-year access to the newest developments and publications in the field of RMDs.

We encourage you to participate in the Scientific Programme by submitting your abstract before 31 January 2016. Last year, more than 4,300 abstracts were submitted and more than 195 sessions and poster tours were offered.  Also, you can save on the registration fee if you plan ahead and register before this deadline.

The congress will be a unique opportunity to learn, for the first time, about the brand new EULAR recommendations on these exciting topics: update of the ASAS (Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society)/EULAR recommendations for the management of axial SpA; EULAR classification criteria for clinically suspected arthralgia; update for the management of early arthritis; and for the treatment of RA with DMARDs. Please mark especially Saturday 11 June in your calendar, since all of these recommendations will have significant implications not just for clinical investigations but also daily disease management. They are a superb example of the numerous initiatives carried out by the many hard working groups in EULAR.

Our online course for health professionals was launched in September 2015. We hope that the initial success will be followed by many more applications during 2016. We would also like to thank the more than 1000 health professionals across Europe who responded to our survey about educational needs. During 2016 we will make every effort to reduce the educational barriers identified, such as lack of resources and language issues.

As you know, EULAR makes a tremendous effort around World Arthritis Day (12 October) together with our patient organisations. The goal for WAD 2016 is to raise awareness and to educate people with RMDs and carers to understand available treatment options and utilise support networks. Stay tuned for this year’s initiative as your participation is key to going viral!

As you can see, EULAR brings us many opportunities to share science and disseminate scientific knowledge throughout the year.

Our website is full of information about activities including our latest recommendations, details about our EULAR Network on Imaging Centres, and bursaries and educational grants which complete our educational offerings.

We invite you to participate in EULAR activities and to take the opportunity to communicate good science and novel developments in our field.
Let’s have a scientifically brilliant new year 2016!
With best regards,

Gerd R. Burmester, EULAR President
