EULAR Board

The Board of Directors at EULAR has a crucial responsibility in guiding and shaping the organisation's vision, mission, and values. The Board of Directors consists of accomplished individuals with diverse expertise and perspectives. These dedicated members work tirelessly to guarantee the best possible outcomes for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases and professionals in the field of rheumatology across Europe and beyond. 

EULAR Past Presidents

Prof. Daniel Aletaha, Austria, is a Full Professor of Rheumatology and Head of the Division of Rheumatology at the Medical University of Vienna. With over 350 published papers in peer-reviewed journals, he is a respected authority in the field of rheumatology. His research focuses on arthritis and other inflammatory rheumatic diseases, precision medicine, and the management of complex diseases. In June 2023, he started his role as the EULAR President, succeeding Prof. Annamaria Iagnocco.  

Prof. Xenofon Baraliakos, Germany, is a Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Ruhr University Bochum . With a remarkable career as a rheumatologist and researcher, he has made significant contributions to the study of axial spondylarthritis and related conditions and has published over 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2023, he was elected as the President-Elect of EULAR and is set to begin his presidency in June 2025.

Prof. Annamaria Iagnocco, Italy, is a Full Professor of Rheumatology and Head of the Academic Rheumatology Centre – Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences, at the University of Turin. Her research interests include rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, with a major interest in ultrasonography and imaging assessment of inflammation and response treatment. She is involved in national and international clinical trials and imaging studies on rheumatic diseases and has authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications. She will continue to serve EULAR as the Past-President and remain a member of the EULAR Board.    

Prof. Laure Gossec, France, is a Full Professor of Rheumatology at Sorbonne Université and Pitié-Salpétriere Hospital. She  has a half-time clinical position where she mainly sees patients with inflammatory arthritis and a half-time teaching and research position. Her main research interests within outcomes research and epidemiological research, are patient-reported outcomes and quality of life, shared decision-making as well as e-health and big data, in patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. She has authored over 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She was elected to the position of EULAR Treasurer in 2023.

Dr. Rikke Helene Moe, based in Norway, is a highly esteemed physical therapist and senior researcher at the Center for Treatment of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (REMEDY) at Diakonhjemmet Hospital in Oslo. Her research primarily concentrates on non-pharmacological care and rehabilitation in rheumatology, with specific interests in physical activity, exercise, and the management of hand osteoarthritis. She has previously served as HPR Chair, National HPR President, and has been active in various other EULAR Committees, initiatives and projects. Dr. Moe's extensive expertise in healthcare and her dedication to interprofessional collaboration have been instrumental in advancing patient care standards through long-term engagement for and participation in European task forces. She was elected EULAR Vice-President HPR in June 2024. 

   

Dr. Elsa Mateus, Portugal, is an anthropologist, experienced patient expert and advocate for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. She is the President of the Board of the Portuguese League Against Rheumatic Diseases (LPCDR) and EUPATI Portugal. Since 2021, she has been EULAR's Vice-President PARE, dedicated to promoting patient empowerment, raising awareness, and fostering collaboration between patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers to ensure the best possible outcomes for individuals living with rheumatic diseases across Europe and beyond.    

Prof. Jose María Álvaro-Gracia, Spain, is a Full Professor of Rheumatology and  the Head of the Rheumatology Department at the Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is the past-president of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology. He is a renowned rheumatologist and his research interests include the pathogenesis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory rheumatic diseases. He has published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is the author or editor of several books on rheumatology. Prof. Álvaro-Gracia started his role as the EULAR Vice-president Scientific Societies in June 2023.

EULAR Governance

EULAR is governed by an elected board composed by 4 experts in rheumatology and one representative of each pillar (organisations representing other health professionals in rheumatology, patient organisations and scientific societies). Our activities are overseen by 5 content committees and 4 representation committees whose activities are delivered by several hundred expert rheumatology volunteers.
