Why the Carol Nachman Medal Matters for PARE 
In June 2026, Maarten de Wit and Neil Betteridge were awarded the prestigious Carol Nachman Medal in Wiesbaden, Germany, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to people living with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Corinna Elling-Audersch attended the ceremony and here we interview her to know why this award matters for PARE.

Tanita-Christina: Corinna, what makes this prize so special? 

Corinna: The Carol Nachman Prize, awarded by the City of Wiesbaden since 1972, is one of the most prestigious international awards in rheumatology. Since 1987, the Carol Nachman Medal has additionally honoured outstanding contributions to the field. For two patient advocates to receive this distinction sends a strong message: patient involvement is an essential part of modern rheumatology. 

Tanita-Christina: The two award winners have helped shape EULAR PARE over many years. What has been at the heart of their work? 

Corinna: Ensuring that the voice and lived experience of people with RMDs are heard – in research, healthcare and policy. Both served as EULAR Vice Presidents representing PARE. Maarten has been a pioneer in advancing patient involvement in research, while Neil has been a powerful voice for patient advocacy and health policy. 

Tanita-Christina: What does meaningful patient involvement mean today? 

Corinna: Patients should not only be invited to participate – their voices should be truly valued and their involvement firmly embedded. They should be equal partners in shaping decisions. 

Tanita-Christina: And what message does this award send to PARE

Corinna: That patient advocacy matters. It can open doors, change perspectives and make a lasting difference. For us in PARE, these medals are more than a recognition of two outstanding individuals. They are also a recognition of patient partnership itself.
